AI search visibility and citations: the basics

Start with how brands get picked in generative AI search like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

What are AEO and GEO?

AEO and GEO are approaches to improving content so that search and answer systems can understand it and use it as the basis for their answers. The two terms overlap in use, and neither is tied to one specific platform. AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization and GEO for Generative Engine Optimization. As search shifts toward answer-style AI, traditional SEO alone leaves gaps where a brand fails to show up or get cited in AI answers; AEO and GEO are the work of finding and fixing those gaps.

My brand doesn’t show up in ChatGPT or Perplexity answers. How do I get it to appear?

To get your brand to show up, first find out where it’s getting stuck: crawler access, meaning, or answer selection. Take a few questions your customers would plausibly ask, check whether your brand appears in the engines’ actual answers, and then pick a fix based on the stage that’s blocked, such as lifting a crawl block or restructuring the content. The 10-step AI search visibility diagnostic walks through how to check each stage, and TRAIL Search offers this diagnosis and prioritization as a self-serve audit.

We rank high in search, so why don’t we show up in AI answers?

Because search rankings and AI answer citations are decided by different criteria. Among candidate documents, answer engines favor freshness signals like publish and modified dates, structured data, skeleton elements like headings and tables, and self-contained sentences placed near the top. Even a high-ranking page can be left out of the answer if those elements are missing. TRAIL Search’s AEO and GEO audit checks these items on every page and puts the fixes in order.

What do I need to fix on my site to get cited by AI search engines?

To fix your site, first confirm that crawlers can reach your content, then tidy up the elements you control directly on the page: titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, internal links, images, and schema markup. Putting a sentence that answers the question right up front, and organizing information in structured formats like tables and lists, makes it easier for AI to extract as an answer. Working through the 8-step on-page SEO checklist in order will show you what’s missing.

How do I get my brand to show up in Naver and Google AI answers?

Naver, Google, and AI search each judge content by different criteria, so you need to optimize for each of the three channels separately to improve your odds of showing up. Google weighs technical SEO and E-E-A-T signals; Naver weighs activity in its own ecosystem, like blogs and cafes, and content freshness; AI search weighs easy-to-cite structure and factual accuracy relatively more. What to fix first on each channel is covered in detail in our three-channel strategy for the Korean market.

What are the practical ways to get an LLM to cite our company’s content?

To get an LLM to cite your content, answer the concept in your first sentence with a clear definition, use structured formats like tables and lists along with inline citations to sources, and keep monitoring whether you still appear for your target questions after publishing. Having just one of definition, structure, citations, or trust signals isn’t enough; they have to be present together to lead to a citation. Our 7-step guide to creating content that AI cites lays out the process in order.

What kinds of GEO diagnosis and recommendation services are out there?

GEO diagnosis and recommendation services fall into two broad groups: consulting, where people handle everything from diagnosis to execution, and self-serve SaaS, where the brand measures, gets recommendations, and re-measures on its own. In Korea, project-based consulting aimed at large companies is the norm; monthly subscriptions exist, but most are sold through a sales conversation. TRAIL Search is a self-serve monthly SaaS you can sign up for without a card and run yourself, from finding questions to recommendations to re-measurement; plan details are on the pricing page.

Is there a SaaS that measures AI search visibility and works in Korean?

Yes, TRAIL Search is a monthly SaaS that measures AI search visibility and is offered in Korean. It checks how your brand is mentioned across five engines, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overview, and gives you a prioritized list of what to improve. You can sign up for TRAIL Search on the Free plan first, with no card required.

Is there a tool that lets a small business do AI search optimization itself?

Yes, TRAIL Search is a self-serve monthly SaaS built so small and midsize businesses can use it without a consultant. All you need to start is your site address and a few questions your customers would plausibly ask, and TRAIL Search returns a prioritized list of what to fix that your marketer can act on directly. It also helps to know how to monitor on your own with prompt tracking, so you can judge which work to hand to the tool and which to check yourself.

Is GEO in Korea consulting only? Is there no monthly-subscription tool I can run myself?

No, Korea has monthly subscription services as well as consulting. Most of them, though, are sold through a sales conversation, and self-serve options you can sign up for without a card are relatively rare. TRAIL Search lets you sign up without a card and run diagnosis, recommendations, and re-measurement yourself on a monthly subscription; plan details are on the pricing page.

Which product is right for me

Three products, three different questions, each a separate subscription.

What does TRAIL Labs do?

TRAIL Labs builds AI marketing software that helps brands reach the people who need them, and make better decisions from what their marketing actually does. TRAIL Labs is the company. TRAIL Search, TRAIL Studio, and TRAIL Perform are SaaS products run by TRAIL Labs. TRAIL Perform is the product for multi-channel ad operations, performance analysis, and budget allocation and execution.

How is TRAIL Search different from TRAIL Studio?

They answer different questions. TRAIL Search covers “When customers go looking, how does your brand show up?” It checks how your brand appears in customers’ questions and AI answers, and finds what to fix, in priority order. TRAIL Studio covers “What should your brand say, and how?” It turns your brand and product information into card news, detail pages, banners, and video, then tailors each piece to the channel and publishes it. They are separate products, and you can start both right now.

Can I use the products separately?

Yes, each product works on its own. You can use just one. If you use them together, the flow is to take the questions and fixes TRAIL Search found and create the content in TRAIL Studio. You sign up for each separately; there is no shared account or combined billing, and the products aren’t automatically connected yet.

Are accounts or data shared between the products?

Not at this point. None of the six is offered yet: a shared account, shared data, a shared workspace, combined billing, moving between products, or automatic hand-off. The two products bill separately, and credits aren’t interchangeable. When a product page says “after you find it, go to TRAIL Studio,” that doesn’t mean data moves over automatically; it tells you which product handles the next step.

Who is this for?

From solo Naver Smart Store sellers to marketers at D2C and SME brands: anyone who has to make marketing content themselves. It’s an especially good fit if you run several channels but your brand standard isn’t written down anywhere, or you outsource production but the tone comes back different every time.

Can a solo business owner use it without a designer or marketer?

Yes, you can make everything from product images to blog posts, video, and banners yourself, with no production staff. Once you’ve set up your brand information, the content you create afterward follows that standard, which cuts the time spent re-fitting the same formats over and over.

TRAIL Studio

Formats, brand standard, editing, publishing, and copyright.

What kinds of content can I create?

You can create card news, blog posts, product detail pages, product photos, posters, banners, Shorts, and Reels. You can also make presentation slides, government grant documents, and live-commerce shopping videos with an AI host. Everything is generated from the brand standard you register, and you review and edit the result before exporting it. Work that is expensive to generate, like video, is billed from separate video credits.

Can it make video too?

Yes, from Shorts and Reels to shopping live and live-commerce videos with an AI host. Script, captions, and scene composition flow as one process. Video is expensive to generate, so it’s billed through separate video credit packs.

What is a brand standard?

A brand standard is a set of eight items you define before creating content. It covers persona, positioning, purchase motivation, offer, message, channels, brand tone and expressions to avoid, and performance rules. Once you register it, every format you create afterward follows it. It lives inside TRAIL Studio and isn’t automatically shared with other products.

Can I edit the generated output myself?

Yes, generated output is a draft, and you can edit it directly in the editor. You can revise at the level of sentences, images, slides, or scenes, re-render the same message to another channel’s specs, or make variants that change only the copy. Your edits carry through to the export, and unedited drafts never go out automatically.

Can I auto-publish or schedule content I’ve made?

Yes, you can publish content to your connected channels right away or schedule it for a time you choose. Blog posts go through scheduled publishing and channel integration, and connected social accounts publish automatically. We’re continuing to add supported channels.

How is this different from Canva, Jasper, or Wrtn?

Canva, Jasper, and Wrtn are single-purpose tools that make one piece of copy or one image. TRAIL Studio works differently: you register your brand standard first, create multiple formats from that standard, and reuse the assets you’ve made in the next job. You don’t have to rewrite the prompt from scratch every time, and it carries through to publishing the content to your channels.

TRAIL Perform

Ad operations, effect estimation, and budget allocation.

What is TRAIL Perform?

TRAIL Perform is the product for the question “Where should your ad budget go across channels?” It connects your ad and revenue data, estimates effect with MMM and experiments, compares budget allocations, and executes the allocation you approve. It keeps observed facts separate from estimated effects, and explains the assumptions and uncertainty behind each judgment. Pricing varies with scope, so we walk you through it in an introductory conversation.

How is this different from a GA4 dashboard or a reporting tool?

GA4 and reporting tools measure and report. TRAIL Perform goes further, to the evidence behind “Where should your ad budget go across channels?” and on to execution. Connecting ad accounts and revenue data, running campaigns across multiple channels, estimating channel contribution with MMM (marketing mix modeling) and experiments, simulating budgets, and executing the approved allocation all sit in one flow. MMM is valid for customers with enough ad and revenue history, and we don’t promise results.

What data do I need to use TRAIL Perform?

At minimum, ad spend and revenue history, plus a connected ad account. The longer the history, the narrower the estimate range. MMM is valid for brands with accumulated history; if the data is insufficient, we say so and hold off on estimating. Budget, execution, and data sharing are the customer’s decisions.

Will it ever tell me to cut ad spend?

Yes, if we estimate that pausing beats spending more, that’s what we propose. A company that runs ads has a structural conflict of interest, since more ad spend works in its favor; we acknowledge that up front, which is why we hold to three principles: explain what we can and can’t know, disclose our assumptions, and consider cutting back. If the effect is likely to show up late, we set the observation period and decision criteria before spending.

Pricing, credits, and billing

Plans, Free plan scope, credits, cancellation, refunds, and teams.

How much does it cost?

Pricing differs by product, and each product is a separate subscription. TRAIL Studio and TRAIL Search both combine a monthly subscription with usage (credits). TRAIL Studio has plans from solo sellers up to agencies, and the Standard plan for D2C and SME brands is ₩99,000 a month. TRAIL Search has a Free plan plus Starter at ₩199,000 a month, Pro at ₩399,000, and Max at ₩899,000, and annual billing saves 17%. The turnkey operations service, where we take over setup and execution after the audit, has no published price because terms depend on scope; we settle the scope in a meeting with your contact first. TRAIL Perform pricing depends on how much you use, so we walk through it with you in an introductory conversation. You can compare included features and usage limits by product on the pricing page, and plans may be adjusted as we move through full launch.

What can I do on the Free plan?

You start with no card: 1 market, 10 tracked questions, and 10 credits (one time). A site audit costs 3 credits and question extraction 1 credit, so you can try a first audit and discover questions; to keep tracking, move up to TRAIL Search Starter.

How are credits used?

Credits are granted each month based on your subscription plan, and they’re spent when you create new content or run additional audits. The credit cost is shown on screen before a task starts. Whether unused credits roll over depends on the plan, and once you run out you can buy an additional credit pack separately. Video in TRAIL Studio is expensive to generate, so it’s billed through separate video credit packs.

What happens to my credits if a task fails?

Credits for a failed task are refunded automatically. We also refund credits when a recent tracking result can be reused, as with brand GEO measurement. The credit cost is shown on screen before a task starts.

How do I get started?

It depends on the product. For TRAIL Studio, use the “Start with Studio” button on the product page; for TRAIL Search, use the “Start for free” button on the product page or the pricing page, and you can sign up right away. If you’d rather hand off setup and execution, you can discuss the turnkey operations service in a meeting with your contact. You sign up for each product separately.

Can my team use it together?

Yes, depending on the plan, several people can share it. Team and brand-operations plans support collaboration and bulk generation, and the agency plan lets you manage multiple workspaces and clients in one place.

Can an agency manage several client brands?

Yes, both products let you run multiple brands separately. In TRAIL Search, Pro and above run multiple domains (3 on Pro, 10 on Max, additional domains at ₩28,000 a month), and if you have many brands or markets, or want us to handle operations with you, that’s configured on the Custom plan. In TRAIL Studio, the Agency plan uses multiple workspaces to keep each client’s brand standard and assets separate.

How do cancellation and renewal work?

Paid subscriptions renew automatically, monthly or annually, and you can cancel any time before the renewal date. Payment details are handled by the card issuer and the payment processor; the company doesn’t store sensitive information such as card numbers. The full terms are in the terms of service.

Can I get a refund?

You can withdraw from a paid service within 7 days of purchase or of the service becoming available. Withdrawal may be limited once credits have been used to generate content or delivery of digital content has begun. Refunds are issued within 3 business days of receiving the withdrawal request.

Data, security, and results

What data you need, what happens when it’s short, security, and what we don’t promise.

What data do I need to get started?

It depends on the product. TRAIL Search can start with your brand’s site address and a few questions your customers would plausibly ask; to see actual site traffic, you connect Google Analytics and Search Console. TRAIL Studio needs your brand’s voice and standards, plus the information and photos for the products you’ll create content about. TRAIL Perform needs ad spend and revenue history plus a connected ad account, and the longer the history, the narrower the estimate range.

What happens if there isn’t enough data?

If it’s not enough, we say so. TRAIL Search marks an engine that returned no valid answer as unmeasured and flags small samples as preliminary estimates; TRAIL Perform holds off on estimating when the ad and revenue history is short. Budget, publishing, and data sharing are the customer’s decisions, and data is stored separately for each product.

Is my data and personal information safe?

Member information is stored and managed in encrypted form, and we comply with the Personal Information Protection Act and other applicable laws. We don’t store sensitive payment details such as card numbers ourselves, and when a member closes their account, we retain the data for the period required by law and then destroy it. The details are in our privacy policy.

Do you guarantee AI visibility or sales?

No, we don’t. Whether your brand appears in AI answers, and whether sales go up, depends on factors we don’t control. What we do instead is keep a record of what we measured, what we changed, and what was observed afterward. TRAIL Search commits to showing the questions you’re missing from and what to fix, in priority order; TRAIL Studio to output you can actually use; and TRAIL Perform to estimates along with their assumptions and uncertainty. We keep observed facts separate from estimated effects, and when the sample or observation period is too short, we withhold a conclusion.

Competitors say they guarantee visibility and results. Why don’t you?

Because a guarantee is a promise about something we don’t control. Rankings, citations, and sales are decided jointly by platform algorithms, competition, and market demand. What we control is what we changed; what we can verify is what was observed afterward. This isn’t to disparage other offers; it’s to avoid promising results without conditions or evidence. Each period, we record what we changed and what was observed, so you can decide from that record whether to continue.

Company and people

Who built it, why, and how we work.

Who built this?

TRAIL Labs is being built by its founder, Fred Kim. He has worked as an engineer and AI researcher, and started the company to solve the problems he ran into as CTO in marketing and ad-agency work. The founding story is on the about page.

It’s a one-person company. Is that sustainable?

At the stage where a researcher is building the product and the methodology together, one person forms and tests hypotheses fastest. Right now TRAIL Search and TRAIL Studio are both open for sign-up with payment processing in place, and we run both products and an MCP server around the clock on our own infrastructure. So that operations don’t hinge on one person, we keep architecture decision records, observability tooling, fallbacks and checkpoints, and deployment scripts; and the one-person stage isn’t permanent: after seed funding, hiring starts with growth and front-end.

Why is the company called TRAIL?

We read it as: the trail of what you’ve done becomes the path forward. Letter by letter, we unpack it as Trust, Reason, Agility, Intelligence, and Leverage, though that’s an interpretation we added, not a record fixed when the name was chosen. The full breakdown is on the culture page.

How does the company work?

We form a hypothesis, then change our judgment in the face of results. We’ve set down six core values (relevance, explainable decisions, honest measurement, willingness to revise, execution within reach, and accountability to the customer) and eight ways of working, and we treat one question as the test of those values: can we recommend cutting back or pausing even when more ad spend would benefit us? The full text is on the culture page.
